First Day(s) With The Host Family

By Liesa , 2 September 2025

Hey y'all!

So I arrived at my host family the day before yesterday, and now I finally got to write about it. That just goes to show how great of a time I'm having so far.

But, let's start at the beginning. As I said, I arrived the day before yesterday, somewhere in the early afternoon. I was picked up in one of those giant pickup trucks and driven to the house I'll be living in for the next year. It's a nice house, though I still haven't really figured out how exactly the shower works. Aside from that, most things are pretty similar to Europe.

My host mother is very kind and fun, my host father will not be home until Saturday, and until this evening, my host grandparents were at the house. They're also very nice people, and I'm sad they already left.

Next to that, I also have two host sisters - as in other exchange students that also reside here - one from Mexico and one from Germany. We all get along quite well and I'm genuinely looking forward to the time we'll be spending together.

Above all that, there are also pets, two dogs and two cats to be exact. One dog is a 14-year-old called Duke, and the other a 9 to 10-year-old called Dobby. I'm not sure about the age of the cats, but they are called Freya and Luna. Luna is quite special, as she likes to do things like jumping on high cabinets to watch us while we're in the kitchen.

Tomorrow will be my first day of school, though then it's only for new students (so also exchange students) and we'll get like a tour of the school and stuff. I'm pretty nervous, 'cause I'm not really sure what to expect and I hope I'll be able to make friends. The good thing is that I already know 3 other exchange students (my host siblings and a friend from Belgium) with whom I can at least walk to school.

I'll try to write about that first school day as fast as possible, and I apologize for the delays so far. I probably also forgot to write some stuff, but nonetheless, thank you for reading, and I'll see you on the next one.

Nervous regards, Cupcake
