First Offcial Day Of School

By Liesa , 4 September 2025

Hey y'all!

Today was the first day we actually had courses. And it was also the day I found out just how different the school system is from my home country.

Because here you can choose ALL of your courses. I do think they have like 2 mandatory ones, but aside from that, free choice! They also have 4 courses per semester. Only four. And the same ones every. single. day.

Today I started with Literature and Writing or something. The teacher was nice, and it would be a course that I could get good grades for, but the students weren't adding to a good vibe. During that lesson, I really wanted to go home, all the way back to Belgium.

The second course that I had was Fitness & Conditioning. Before attending the lesson, I was really dreading having to do that course every single day. But, as the teacher explained what it was about and what we were going to do, I actually started to look forward to it.

After that, we had lunch, and then I headed to one of the gyms for my next course, which was called 'Active Living'. It turned out to be P.E. with a fancy name. It wasn't necessarily bad or exceptionally good; I just wished I had changed into my sports clothes before the lesson.

For the last course, I had Foundations of Mathematics for the 11th grade. The teacher seemed rather nice and had the most creative way of taking attendance so far. She made us sit in alphabetical order, except that we had to figure out what order that then would be ourselves. For remembering names, she also told us to think of alliterations with our first names. For example, I was 'Lychee Liesa'.

So it was quite fun, but as I'm planning on studying engineering once I'm back in Belgium, it might be more useful if I revise a higher level of mathematics. Next to that, the one course I really wanted to do was theater, and that was nowhere on my schedule, not even for the second semester. One of my friends also had to change one of her courses, so after school, we went to the counselor to ask if we could switch some of our courses.

The counselor was like, 'Yeah, sure. And for Liesa, you have 2 physical courses. Would you like to change one of them?' Then after some looking at what the other options were, my schedule became: Foundations of Mathematics - 12th grade, Fitness & Conditioning, Physics (though I might switch that to Chemistry) and Theatre.

So in the end, I got the course I really wanted, the one that would be more useful for me, and I got rid of the one I didn't feel good in.

All's well that ends well.

Happy regards, Cupcake
